Statement

Working from photos and drawings gathered from both backpacking the American landscape and gardening in my backyard, my work is an attempt to capture the intricate complexity within a moment in nature wherever it can be found or cultivated. My paintings investigate that moment, through shapes and patterns at varying scales of observation, revealing a tender depth and an immersive environment. Through the use of rich color, brush strokes and dense activity, I focus tightly on a landscape rather than a specific vanishing point, sometimes abstracting the subject itself, creating an atmosphere I want to feel overtaken by. By capturing a specific detail in an ever-changing landscape, change inflicted by both natural life cycles and the harm of human intrusion, I hope to envelop the viewer in an intimacy with that paradox. Twentieth Century American figurative painters Lois Dodd, Neil Welliver and Fairfield Porter are influences, as I seek to connect my work to the landscape that informs it.
